Potentiation

What is empowerment?

Be the multiplication 2 . 2 . 2 . 2where all factors are equal. We may abbreviate this product:

2 . 2 . 2 . 2 = 24 = 16

We call it:

Base: the repeating number.
Exponent: the number of equal factors.
Power: the result of the operation.

The operation performed is called potentiation.

Examples:

54 = 5 . 5 . 5 . 5 = 625

43 = 4 . 4 . 4 = 64

Reading

Take a look at some examples:

3² (reads “three squared or the square of three”)
2³ (reads “two raised to cube or cube of two”)
(reads “seven raised to the fourth power or the fourth power of seven”)
(reads “six raised to the fifth power or the fifth power of six”)

Note:

A natural number is a perfect square when it is the product of two equal factors. For example, the numbers 4, 36 and 100 are perfect squares because 2² = 4, 6² = 36 and 10² = 100.
