Marie Litzinger


Marie Litzinger He was born May 14, 1899 and died on April 7, 1952. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1920 and his Master of Arts degree in 1922 from Bryn Mawr College. He taught at Devon Manor School while working on his master's degree.

She was awarded the European Society Bryn Mawr after her graduation in 1920, which she used to study at the University of Rome during 1923-24. After teaching at the Greenwich Academy for a year, she joined the mathematics department of Mount Holyoke Teaching Center in 1925 where she taught until her death in 1952.

During this time she continued her undergraduate studies and received her Ph.D. in 1934 from the University of Chicago with the thesis "The basis for residual polynomials in variables." This was published in March 1935 in the subject of Transactions of the American Mathematical Society. Litzinger became president of the mathematical department of Mount Holyoke in 1939.

At the time of her death, the newscast Byrn Mawr Alumnae praised her for "the way Marie had built the Mathematics Department and encouraged cooperation between the Smith, Amherst and Mt. Holyoke mathematics departments."
