Nowadays, there is a lot of talk about teacher performance in the classroom. Many professionals, even knowing that their way of working and classroom posture can have positive or negative consequences for their students, still impose themselves on these students in an authoritarian way. They do not know that the consequences for students are disastrous, because most of them end up hating the teacher, the subject and, consequently, the school in which they study.
When the teacher assumes an authoritarian posture, one sees undoing in the student all the capacity for creation, interaction, construction of their own knowledge, raising and proving hypotheses, as well as all their autonomy in relation to the proposed challenges. The student becomes an onlooker and attends classes taught by the supreme master as if it were a movie in which the script is already written and cannot be changed.
One of the biggest challenges facing the school these days is to effectively address one of its main goals: to enable students to do something that has not yet been done, to stimulate the creative capacity of the students.
The traditional way some teachers present themselves refers to the role of the school, the transmission of elaborate knowledge, aiming to pass on to the student the knowledge and values accumulated by the generations and passed on as truths. The contents worked by these teachers are separated from the student's experience and the social realities in which they participate.
The traditionalist teaching method is based on the verbal exposition of the subject (expository class of contents), in which both the exposition and the analysis are made by the teacher, that is, it exposes the ready-made content to the students considering that all are equal, or that is, they do not consider the intellectual diversity of knowledge within the classroom.
In the relationship of this teacher with his student, the authority of the teacher predominates, which demands the students' receptive attitude and prevents any communication between them during the course of the class. The teacher conveys the content in the form of truth to be absorbed. Consequently, imposed discipline is the most effective means of ensuring attention and silence.
We know that the main purpose of the school is to make the student a thinking and active being in the society in which he is inserted. To create conditions for this student to be autonomous in the construction of his knowledge.
Throughout the teacher / student interaction, it is up to the first to mediate and assist the student in the task of learning enabling him to think with autonomy. To learn, the student needs to have by his side someone who perceives him at different moments of the learning situation and helps him to evolve during the teaching and learning process, in order to reach the highest possible levels of knowledge.
The school desired by all aims to awaken in the student, the possibility of working for democratization in all sectors of society. Thus, the so-called critical education seeks the struggle for the transformation of society, from the perspective of its effective and concrete democratization, reaching the political, social and economic aspects.
The teaching professional has to act as a facilitator or mediator between the knowledge and the student. It is up to the school to contribute to the elimination of social selectivity and make democratic education. By acting in this way we will be contributing to make students aware, thinking and active beings within the society in which they participate.
In this context, we bring to discussion: what are the consequences of the authoritarian attitude of the classroom teacher on the students, because we understand that the teaching role can contribute favorably or not to the formation of a critical citizen.
