Challenge Response 125

How many single men are there?

3/10 men + 2/5 women = total married

However, the number of married men must be equal to the number of married women. So considering x the number of men and y o numbers of women we have:

1. (3/10) x = (2/5) y
2. x + y = 100%

Isolating x in the first equation, we find x = (4/3) y.

Substituting in equation 2, we have:

(4/3) y + y = 100 (x3)

4y + 3y = 300

7y = 300

y = 42 6/7 (forty two integers and six sevenths)

So 42 6/7% of the population are women, which means that 57 1/7% are men. As 3/10 of all men are married, we need to remove 3/10 (30%) from 57 1/7%:

57 1/7 * 70% = 40%

We then discover that 40% of the group are single men.
